Laser cleaning of metals

Metals are not interchangeable. Reflectivity, thermal conductivity, melting behaviour and surface finish all differ between alloys, and parameters must be selected accordingly.

Material by material

Carbon steel is generally the most straightforward substrate and tolerates a wider operating window. Stainless steel requires care where the visible finish matters, because heat tint and surface appearance can change. Aluminium is reflective and thermally conductive, which narrows the usable parameter range. Cast iron has a porous, graphitic surface that behaves differently again. Bronze and brass are frequently encountered in architectural and heritage contexts where patina may need to be retained rather than removed.

Surface finish objectives

The required finish is agreed before work begins. Cleaning to remove contamination, cleaning prior to coating and cleaning where appearance is the objective are different targets and may require different parameters and pass counts.

Parameters and suitability differ by alloy, surface condition and finish requirement. No universal setting applies across metals.
